While I'm just as fatalistic about inexorable economic cycles as you seem to be, to claim that an Admin in Washington can’t exacerbated or mitigate the effects of the cycles contradicts both my (admittedly limited) abilities to reason and my reading of history. To take one example, suppose that instead of tax cuts for the wealthy, one half of that money was used to support rebuilding the nations infrastructure – result more jobs, superior infrastructure and less national debt.

Broadstbull. In the past 15 or 20 years, the markets have been artificially manipulated by the Fed in the form of interest hikes and then, too little too late, interest rate cuts. Interest rates to the average consumer are rising again despite the 40 year low between lenders. I understand how nice it is to pay less taxes, however, people -whom I KNOW, pay no PIT on incomes of over 400k. How fair is that? The current crisis has been worsened by the Bush Administration. You may have $2,000 more to spend, but you have to spend more for gas, don't you. And that's just the beginning. Here in Oregon the price of gas at the pumps is over 2.00 per gallon - simply unheard of. Over the course of a year of driving, that kind of price increase alone will eat up your windfall. Oregon also has the highest unemployment in the country and there is no end in sight as current jobs continue to go offshore and the economy worsens. Things are so bad here, people have only to ask for food stamps to get them. The agencies that help people are being swamped. Things will continue to get worse unless we get rid of Bush. Remember, you can't get an income tax break unless you have income and increasing numbers of Americans are losing their jobs.
