I read somewhere that the rule of thumb that arabs go by is one ounce of gold should be worth about 20 barrels of oil. By that standard gold is undervalued and probably under accumulation if this metric is true.

Just a quick note on the apparent disdain of the west for gold. I don't find it surprising that most of these players find gold uninteresting. Most of the gold that was possesed by the us, france, england, and spain came via plunder and imperialism. US gold for the most part came from the gold rush so perhaps that doesn't apply but one should also remember that the federal govt owns about 1\3 of all the land in the US and most of it is rich gold bearing areas. Many of the best ones have been turned into national monuments and parks or wildlife areas so that the public may not try to recover any of the wealth. I think this was done to protect the gold under the guise of environmental protection. There are just as many wild areas without gold and they are still multiple use. If uncle sam ever decides he wants it snail darters and all that will be out of luck pretty quick but in the meantime nobody else can bother it.

Beyound all the gold and oil, the bottom line is this.
--
There is no real wealth but the labor of man.
Were the mountains of gold and the valleys of silver,
the world would not be one grain of corn the richer;
nor one comfort would be added to the human race.
:Percy Bysshe Shelly

Getting Labor "cheap" is primary aim of the powerful,
& don't ever doubt it.
