I'm not sure McCarthy's demonization was warranted; he was doing what he believed was right. I much prefer someone who has conviction and acts on it over someone who has to stop and take a poll to make a decision.

McCarthy's calculated and well thought out attacks damaged many lives; many of whom were innocent of the crimes of which he accused them. It is believed that he was gay and that his shame over this issue is what lead him to do what he did. In the end, he was censored by the Senate when his party cohorts had no further use of him. I believe he got off to easily, and frankly, I think he is a much worse human being than Nixon.

I certainly do believe that Nixon lied and misled the American people, and had he not have had the decency to resign he likely should have been impeached. Just as Clinton was impeached for lying. I do think it is sad that Clinton got away with it, setting a horrible example for the nation's children. He need not have gone to jail (the traditional punishment for lying under oath) but he should have at least been removed from office so we couldn't so easily have a group of idiots holding him up as a positive example.

I don't think any person, including children, who sees how Clinton has been diminished thinks he got away with anything. In my mind, he's played a high price for a couple of bjs.
