OK, I'm calling a time out here. You have a good thread here LB, and I like discussing the issues with you. I am going to consider your thoughts.

My dictionary doesn't have "Peoria’s" in it, but I think I get your point now.

college.hmco.com

My point:

The USA is the worlds leading economy and nation, but it's getting itself into a bind over debt. The USA imho has an opportunity to make the world a better place by doing what it does best.. LEADING. It can do this by improving the condition of the USA for it's own citizens.

If the oncoming financial crisis is resolved into protectionist trade policies, the USA already being in deep debt to foreign countries, more economic strife will only continue imho at best. The strife will be felt worldwide but would include the USA. I don't even want to think about worst-case scenarios.

Your later comment “The ultimate Money is credit good for future delivery of energy”. is a useful concept. To save money and pay off the National debt one therefore needs to conserve energy. Something to consider when you next stop at the gas station and fill up. All our possessions, food, and energy were probably delivered by truck on a road in the greatest majority of cases. It took lots of energy to do that. A lot of energy could be saved if hi speed trains were used in the USA. Time would be saved too. A four track inter city railway could probably take the same traffic as six lane freeway. They could be "drive on & drive off" trains even. That would free up a whole load of land, save fuel and save time. The USA highways are in poor condition so now would be a good time to upgrade the infrastructure for the next few hundred years.

Of course, reduced oil consumption would be helpful in the political scene too -g-... Maybe other benefits as well.

/edit. You don't need consultants to fix this problem. Just give it to the USA's and worlds University engineering departments to fix. Give a token award to the successful ideas, the prestige should be enough for them to join in I would expect. Start with a blank sheet though.

/edit edit. Thats got to be about the nearest thing to a "free lunch" as you can safely get. Bush should do it today.
