Because it's a blog, I assume certain kinds of errors, slips, typos, of the sort everyone makes on SI or in their emails. Even manuscripts turned in to publishers as finished products for publication have those.

"Suspended" for "suspension" could be a typo sort of error (one writes and says suspended more than one does suspension and the fingers have their way), or, you're right, it could be that she doesn't know that a suspended bridged is called a suspension bridge. I tend to think the person who wrote that does, but maybe not.

As for "I always say this war is about oil. It is"... that's correct, for the context, I think. It's a recent war, she's having these conversations in her contemporary life, not about an historical event about which she continues to assert what she has always asserted. The meaning is, "When someone asks me, I always say this war is about oil." Not "When I have in the past been asked, I have always said..."

Scanning, I did look to see if there was more than one writer peeking through, but I didn't notice that.
