Well, if "eons" include 1991-1999, you'll find that Pete Wilson was California's Republican governor for two full terms. He was elected (and not recalled) in 1990, then re-elected (and not recalled) in 1994.

If California doesn't come to its senses and defeat the recall, if Bustamante can't hold the Dems together, and if the Right can't unite behind a single candidate, then there is only one leader for California....
