I'm watching Hong Kong on some web cameras at weatherland.org.hk and it's interesting... Unfortunately, all of these web cams look out from Hong Kong Island to the north, at Kowloon. I can't see south or east. I figure it's what, almost 6:00pm there now? About 2 more hours to go, maybe a little longer... Oh, a few years ago now, my wife and I were vacationing in Cabo San Lucas, on the southern tip of Baja California, Mexico when an unexpected guest, Hurricane Frank(?) showed up offshore. At the time, we were completely unaware that a tropical system had developed and was so close to us. Anyway, when Frank passed by us, it was still just a tropical storm, barely missing being a minimum hurricane. We were sitting in the bar at the resort (Westin Resort) when the winds picked up and some spotty showers were falling, with sporadic lightning and booming thunder. I remember watching as a pool table and some lighter tables and chairs began sliding past the glass window we were seated next to. I called the bartender over, who alerted other employees and the mad rush was on to pick up tables, chairs, and anything else not secured to the ground. They dragged all that stuff inside the bar. For about the next hour or so, things got progressively worse. The winds were particularly bad. The glass windows (like picture windows) were actually bending inward towards the bar. My wife and I moved from where we were sitting (next to the window) to the relative safety of the bar (maybe another 15 feet or so away from the windows). Some guest (undoubtedly some American jerk) thought it would be "funny" to touch the glass as it was bending. I damn near tackled him before he could get there, and he wasn't pleased that I stopped him. I had to explain to him about things like surface tension, the heat in his fingers, the oils in his fingers, the weight of his fingers, why glass shatters... The idiot still wanted to touch the glass. The bartender told him to get away from the windows. The glass never shattered, but it bent a good inch or so, enough so that it was visible to the naked eye. The storm eventually passed by Cabo in a few hours, but became a hurricane north of us, and really destroyed some of the Mexican towns and villages to the north. Flooding, winds, lightning, storm surge... I forget how many dead and injured there were, not too many, but enough to make Mexican headlines for a day or two. So, don't play with bending glass... <g> KJC
