However, in China manufacturers are facing a sales crisis sparked by the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) that impacted sales there in the second quarter, the reports said. Growth in emerging markets was the main reason why handset unit sales rose 11.9 percent year-on-year and two percent from the first quarter to a new high, the reports said. "Sales in Japan, Latin America and the developing markets of central and eastern Europe and the Middle East and Africa far exceeded expectations during the quarter," one Reuters report quoted Gartner as saying. Nokia remained in number one position with 35.9 percent market share up from 35.0 percent in the first quarter. Nokia was predicted to increase its market share to in excess of 40 percent later in the year. Motorola dropped to 14.6 percent from 14.7 percent in the first quarter, hurt by the SARS epidemic and competition in the Chinese market. Samsung fell to 9.9 percent from 10.5 percent due to SARS and lower handset subsidies. Siemens also declined; to 7.0 percent from 7.6 percent due to a lack of new models but Sony Ericsson rose to 5.5 percent from 4.8 percent. Gartner was reported as saying there is an imminent crisis in the Chinese market, where sales to distributors exceeded purchases by customers by more than 40 percent.
