7:57AM Goldman Sachs raises view of software sector : Goldman Sachs upgrades their US software coverage view to Attractive from Neutral, saying macro conditions in the US are showing signs of improvement, there are indications of bottoming in Europe, and they expect a seasonally strong Q4 followed by further improvement in IT spending extending in 2004; although software stocks likely already reflect much of the recent macro improvements, some additional macro improvement in the US and stabilization in Europe during 2004 may yield EPS upside to software vendors, and the software sector has lagged most other tech subsectors and may have an opportunity to outperform in the seasonally strong Q4. Firm continues to emphasize investment in Outperform-rated MSFT, SAP, and SYMC.
