"ISM said its gauge of manufacturing activity was 54.7 for August, up from 51.8 in July and well above economists' average forecast of 53.8, according to a Reuters poll. A reading above 50 indicates a growing factory sector.

Despite the increase, the employment reading fell to 45.9 from 46.1.

"I think the markets really want to see better employment news," said Paul Cherney, chief market analyst at Standard & Poor's. "It's been the bad employment news that compelled short-term traders to take profits intraday."
