That is because Clinton is a part of our "family" and he was being dishonest with US. However, if he shakes hands with some foreign leader pledging affection whilst his satellites and secret agents plot subterfuge economically or politically--then we are more forgiving and perhaps even find it estimable--depending on consequences and outcomes as it relates to our personal interests as a Nation and as a society with particular regard for certain values.

We know that MANY are opposed to our interests, but the President ought not to be so opposed. A President who deceives for our benefit is one thing. One who lies for personal gain and sullies our personal trust is quite another. I doubt you disagree with any of this but I am simply trying to be clear.

Society is replete with myriad groups of self interest from family to organization to Industrial concerns. One measures out trust carefully, and one is advised to play the cards close to the chest except between a few intimates.

In tribal days the lines of demarcation between us and other were perhaps more clearly drawn than in a society with centralized Government, but even within tribes (and amongst friends) it is necessary or advisable to deceive at times. If one has set one's heart on the hand of a woman, one does not always convey a totally accurate picture of oneself or of one's opponent.

Naturally, I am not discrediting the value of honesty. It is one of the most fundamental values intrinsic to the human condition and necessary for our survival qua humans.
