thanks for your response. a few comments.

1) if you study the bible, you will find that whenever words "day" or "year" are preceded by a number, (i.e. "six days"), it is always literal unless qualified otherwise. obviously "day" can refer to an age as well, as in, "abraham rejoiced to see my day" (the age of the Lord).

2) if we are to accept the notion that each of the six days could represent a million actual years, a billion, or even a thousand, then how would you explain the fact that God created all the vegetation on the earth on the third day, and didn't create the sun and the moon until the fourth day? vegetation could surely survive a literal day of 24 hours, but if each day figuratively represents a million years, how could the vegetation survive a million years without the sun?

Point being, I think common sense would suggest the Earth itself is probably millions of years old

common sense would dictate to me that i should trust the word of God, who was there, when you and i were not! For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. --Exodus 20:11 He has told us that the heaven and the earth were created in six days, why should i believe a bunch of quack scientists who have no scientific proof for their absurd theories?

If we have telescopes that now see out millions of light years, then the objects they are looking at have to be that old, do they not? Man, animals, etc., however, could be only 6000 years old.

the word of God appears to say otherwise. man and woman were made at the beginning of creation, not millions or billions of years subsequent to the formation of the earth.

But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female. --Mark 10:6
