Some researchers believe that a more accurate term for negative attitudes toward homosexuals would be "homosexual-prejudice", (or "homo-prejudice"), since the connotations for this prejudice are similar to that regarding race and gender.

But I would bet a lot of money that most people understand homophobia to mean a dislike or strong contempt for homosexuals. As most people go, so goes the dictionary. And so it has gone. End of story.
