'Raw' chip sales figures show extra strength in July By Peter Clarke Silicon Strategies 09/03/2003, 9:44 AM ET SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Worldwide un-averaged monthly chip sales in July were $12.2 billion, an increase of 10.9 percent on un-averaged sales in July 2002, according to numbers published by the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA). Although the 'raw' July sales revenue was lower than the $12.905 billion number given out earlier this week (see September 2 story) that is because previous number is a three-month monthly average of sales in May, June and July. The SIA, and others, promulgate three-month moving averages of monthly sales activity to smooth variations due to companies' sales reporting calendars, which often follow a 4-4-5 weeks-in-the-month pattern thereby inflating March, June, September and December numbers. Despite the 'actual' sales number being lower than the averaged number it indicates stronger growth in the industry than the averaged sales figure, which was 10.5 percent above the equivalent 2002 figure. The 'actual' worldwide July chip sales figure was 10.9 percent ahead of the same month a year ago. Chip sales covering the seven-month period January to July was $86.4 million, 11.8 percent ahead of the sales of $77.3 million in the same period in 2002. However the geographical disparity that has typified the patchy recovery in the semiconductor market has continued with growth strong in the Japan, Asia-Pacific and European regions but a decline recorded in the Americas region. In July, as in every other month in 2003, Americas region chip sales were less than in the same month a year before. In July chip sales in Americas region were $2.17 billion, in Europe $2.32 billion, in Japan $3.09 billion and in Asia-Pacific region $4.62 billion, according to the SIA's 'raw' data.
