We should quit now, imo. The consequences: 1.- Jeopardize oil supplies as we would not be able to protect them if necessary; 2.- Invite more terror; 3.- Dilute the perception of the impact of our power, thereby diminishing our worldwide influence. These are grave considerations, especially the first.

Agree completely. Will try to remember to comment more tonight or tomorrow night if I get time to write properly. Am not certain only about the last sentence, but perhaps so. re: "By making 9/11 into a totem, we made political Islam a lot more powerful than we needed to. 9/11 was spectacular- but that was the point, and there weren't a lot of people involved in it. By making it a huge symbolic watershed event, that "changes everything", we made it a huge symbolic even for political Islam. Our bad, imo. We should not have done that. We should quit now, imo."
