You can't violate international law simply because you like the real estate- well you can, but it doesn't excuse the violation, and the people living on the real estate will rarely thank you for it. Saddam didn't provide much of an excuse, it wasn't the kind to make the rest of the world jump at the chance to go for the glory in Iraq- and now it appears the glory is a bit expensive for the US to shoulder alone. (and yes, I know, we are a "coalition"; look up how much the coalition members are paying, before you tell me about how much assistance we have).

"Iraq was and is simply a well-located piece of real estate and Saddam was stupid enough to provide the high-profile excuse."
You are forgetting along with the Neocons one of Machiavelli's most important dictums: People will praise you if do what you can succeed at doing, and they will blame you if you fail.

The neocons badly overestimate the power of military force if you do not have the will to adopt scorched earth policies, and at least right now, the US does not have that will (fortunately for both us and the rest of the world).

You forget that one of the goals of the war in Iraq was to plant the infrastructure for a substantial more or less permanent military presence in the ME.

And the main goal of most militant Islam is to have us off their lands and out of their affairs.

Why not oblige them?
