Ted, You don't see the absurdity of calling french fries freedom fries?

As I recall, it was a simple patriotic restaurant owner who did that and got publicity because of it. Listening to Johnny Depp, you'd think Congress just passed a bill or Bush gave some sort of executive order.

In a sense, they did........french fries in the Congressional cafeteria have been renamed freedom fries..........much to my embarrassment as an American.

"French fries in the House of Representatives' cafeterias will now be known as "freedom fries" as part of a Republican protest at France's opposition to a war on Iraq."

I saw "Pirates" in the movie theaters, and Depp gave a wonderful performance. Unfortunately on Jay Leno, the guy sounded like he was two overdoses away from Ozzy Osbourne. And this article confirmed that the guy has no clue; all he's doing is echoing anti-American nonsense.

Look, I don't know J. Depp. He could be the biggest a-hole in the world although I thought he was cool in Edward S/hands and he was good with Isabelle Adjani in the movie about chocolate. However, what he says was a very apt description of the US. And this issue re freedom fries is a big joke! Don't be so provincial that you won't see the view of things form the outside.

I have an Aussie friend who is both conservative and religious. As a consequence, I have not said too much to him about the war........I value his friendship and didn't want to get into it with him. Finally, a few weeks ago, he brought the subject up by asking what was happening. I decided to level with him........that I was against the war; that I was liberal; that I did not support the Bush administration bla bla bla. I was surprised at this response.

He has mixed feelings about the war and AU's role in it and is not sure if he opposes it or not. However, what he was clear about is that he thinks American conservatives are over the top and that the religious right in America is ridiculous. Frankly, I was glad to hear it but, of course, that's generally the lines you hear when you talk to foreigners whether you are liberal or conservative. It always pays to listen to people who are a bit removed from the mess you are in.
