"If we can view one of the goals of society to be to bring a synergistic benefit to all its composite members, then the presence of deception is evidence of social weakness or in the case of war, abject failure."

You are begging the question. You claim it is evidence of social weakness but that is the very thing to be proved. In fact, it appears all too obvious that deception is one of the most important tools of social improvement; as well, it is indispensable in the fight for a just world.

"So, I hope that you will agree to narrow our discussion to the actual issue of deceitful lying that is intended to cause harm to another."

Nobody on the thread has argued that deception in the cause of harm could be justified? I said over and over that the moral nature of both truth and lies were assessed in regard to the values and goals they served. So do you agree that deception in the service of causing GOOD to another (rather than the harm you have just mentioned) is laudable?? Should one tell a rapist what bedroom your daughter is sleeping in because onr thinks that "telling the truth" is primary rather than secondary?? I guess you need to decide. Again...there has been no disagreement as regards the condemnation of either truth or deceit where they cause HARM to another person--has there??
