Labels are identifying. Some labels identify your core perspective on life in ways that all persons who know you or will know you will be effected by. Gender and sexual orientation is one of those. They have a significant impact on one’s social outlook and dynamic. People claiming to not care if they are labeled as something they are not may qualify in that category of “abnormal fear of being labeled a homophobe.” Especially if they are going to great lengths to make known how much they don't care. Of course they would be the first to deny it for obvious reasons.

I would only be upset if I thought being an actuary, or a latent actuary, was a really awful thing.

Well, there are other possibilities. For example, you might be upset because you just finished telling the person that you were not an actuary and calling you one means the party wasn't listening. Or you might be upset because you were actually an astronaut, and, while being an actuary is all well and good, being an astronaut is really, really wonderful, so being considered an actuary would not please you. Or you might be wearing some very un-actuary like fashion, so it would be virtually impossible to mistake you for an actuary.

I'm pulling a Chris here, just to try it on for size. I promise not to annoy you further with that approach.

I agree that yours is the most likely reason. <g>
