NEW COMPETITION FOR HONG KONG WOMEN
Here come the China brides
HONG KONG - Women from the mainland are making it easier for Hong Kong men, who once had to travel to China for Chinese brides: More of those women are now coming to Hong Kong to get hitched.

Statistics from the Immigration Department show that more than 6,000 out of 18,000 registered marriages during the first seven months this year, or a record 33 per cent, involved Chinese women, the Ming Pao Daily News reported.

That is a marked increase from 10.6 per cent in 2000, and the number is expected to rise further with China's recent move to allow individual travellers to visit the territory, observers said.
