I thought of you today whilst soaring cross country above the clouds. The book I was reading lasted me just the length of the trip, with allowance for scanning the skymall catalog, that is. Anyway, the book reminded me of you.

I read the second book in the series that X and I were talking about the other day, Tears of the Giraffe, and there was a lot of discussion about lying and the loss of an earlier, simpler ethic, which is what reminded me of you. The protagonist is a lady detective in Botswana. The books are beautifully written, gentle, thoughful, interesting. I had recommended the first book in the series Number 1 Ladies' Detective Agency for X's school reading list. In the second book, she is mulling the ethics of lying to help people, which she does as a detective despite her fierce sense of ethics.

I think you would like the books. I'd bet your girls would, too.

I have to run out and find a bookstore that stocks the third in the series as soon as I get through all of today's messages.

And thanks X, once again, for putting me onto these books. Assuming you're seeing this message, of course. <g>
