I think we are in relative agreement, then. I certainly do not think that a lie should be used to justify "brutal despotism". That would not be a good thing, at all. Where it serves good things, though...then it IS clearly good.

Deception and truth are valuable in two areas: 1). In developing trust and reflecting reality; 2). In serving values which promote justice and the "good". Within homogenized groups, truth generally serves the group.

Still...if you will wash your hands before leaving the bathroom, I will certainly forgive 6 or 7 "lies" about how smart your dog is.
