i think, but am by no means sure, that the commercials are the proprietary trading desks of the big Wall St firms, and may also include large hedge funds (large speculators in commodities data) for the financial futures. that was the vague impression i have, and seems to be what CI was talking about in this focus piece on COT ("COT Redhanded") from 5 weeks ago: contraryinvestor.com
in this report CI was already suggesting back in late July that the large commercial short position could fuel the flames of this rally. of course the short position has only gotten larger in the interim.

please let me know if you get a better definition.

picked up some cheap index puts just in case....today's rush into equity calls may be signaling an ST reversal and volatility premiums sure are non-existent on index puts right now. this puts me in a 'market neutral' position...whichever way it goes now, i'm likely to quickly take the short or the long leg off the table, hopefully at a slight profit. still smarting from underestimating the market's strength previously as it were...i'm one of those 'smart guys' that got run over a bit. luckily the gold stocks have come through so nicely...

from trotsky aka the one who doesn't exist:

who would rather pay twice as much for their PCs, cars and assorted gizmos and geegaws to forthwith live in their version of 'prosperity' , worry no longer: frat boy is on your side...he too wants you to pay more, while at the same time shafting the foreign creditors of the empire. what a great combination! you are about to get your wish! read all about it here ( and prepare to rein in that old consumerism a bit in the not-too-distant future ) :
