U.S. faces stiff Asian opposition to its call for
flexible currency exchange policy

PHUKET, Thailand (AP) -- The United States faced stiff opposition in Asia to its demand
for more flexible currency exchange policies, especially in China, as the finance
ministers of Pacific rim countries prepared to wrap up a two-day meeting Friday.

Ministers of the 21-member Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum debated the
issue late Thursday with the United States demanding that China float its currency
freely as soon as possible.

U.S. Treasury Secretary John Snow said he wants this position to be reflected in a joint
statement that the ministers were scheduled to issue later Friday. But several Asian
members including Malaysia, Hong Kong, Taiwan have sprung to the defense of China,
and insisted on a more neutral statement.
