To: Clappy who wrote (28456 ) 9/5/2003 10:59:03 AM From: abuelita Read Replies (1) | Respond to of 104216 it was a working trip this time clappy. we've owned the place for five years exactly on the 28th of august so it was time to start. we had made a list of jobs to do on a priority basis - out of a list of about 108 things to do, we accomplished one and almost finished the next. the first was to install a new window by the kitchen sink. everything we did held hidden obstacles - very frustrating. removing the old window was a test - harold ended up cutting the siding to get it out. later, at the legion pub, a guy said - "never, ever cut the siding". he had to do all kinds of extra precautionary things to ensure that rain would not get in cause the prevailing winds hit that window at gale force or higher for most of the winter. oy! second thing was to build a pedestal for the wood burning stove. this was the perfect time to do it 'cause we weren't using it. he built it and i tiled it - sort of. they wouldn't rent me a wet saw (i think cause i'm a woman <ng>) but had to measure the tiles i wanted cut and take them to this guy and he'd cut them for me. well, that works some of the time, but i really needed to have the saw on site. anyway, didn't get all the tiles cut, so didn't grout, so we hadn't replaced the stove before we left. we're going to buy a saw for next time and have it shipped up. then i'll rent it out - to women tilers only <g> we bought a pocket door for the lav by the back door. a guy is going to install it for us while we're away, but we thought we'd do the grunt work and remove the dry wall to save him time and us money. guess what? the heating vent to the upstairs bathroom was behind the wall. it's gone now. double oy! however, there's good stuff too. while harold was wrestling with the window, i did manage to finish painting the exterior doors and trim - front and side. i painted them black - bright shinny black - which is the lastest trend in vancouver. but no one has a black door up there. it looks real cool. so, to answer your question, no i didn't find any cool stuff washed ashore BUT we did find a lot of really cool lumber at a mill which had closed down. piles and piles of cedar lumber has been sitting outside of this mill. all the exposed pieces had turned silver with the weather - i should have taken a picture. anyway, it was being sold really cheaply and some of it was given away. we calculated how much we'd need for a fence around the back yard and for a wood shed and rummaged through the piles and got what we needed. we got cedar shiplap siding for the shed and planking for the floor and 12', 1x5 planks for a scucum cedar rail fence and cedar fence posts and cedar trim to frame the outside windows - all for under $200. that was as much fun as beach combing. i'd make a bet that when we're up next - probably april - there will be no lumber left. we should have gotten more. oy. we've got our work cut out for us :) hoser
