it was a working trip this time
clappy. we've owned the place for
five years exactly on the 28th of
august so it was time to start.

we had made a list of jobs to do
on a priority basis - out of a list of
about 108 things to do, we accomplished
one and almost finished the next.

the first was to install a new window
by the kitchen sink. everything we
did held hidden obstacles - very
frustrating. removing the old window
was a test - harold ended up cutting
the siding to get it out. later, at the
legion pub, a guy said - "never, ever
cut the siding". he had to do all kinds
of extra precautionary things to ensure
that rain would not get in cause the
prevailing winds hit that window at gale
force or higher for most of the winter.

oy!

second thing was to build a pedestal for
the wood burning stove. this was the
perfect time to do it 'cause we weren't
using it. he built it and i tiled it
- sort of. they wouldn't rent me a wet
saw (i think cause i'm a woman <ng>)
but had to measure the tiles i wanted
cut and take them to this guy and he'd
cut them for me. well, that works some
of the time, but i really needed to have
the saw on site. anyway, didn't get
all the tiles cut, so didn't grout, so
we hadn't replaced the stove before we
left. we're going to buy a saw for next
time and have it shipped up. then i'll
rent it out - to women tilers only <g>

we bought a pocket door for the lav
by the back door. a guy is going to
install it for us while we're away, but
we thought we'd do the grunt work and
remove the dry wall to save him time
and us money. guess what? the heating
vent to the upstairs bathroom was behind
the wall. it's gone now.

double oy!

however, there's good stuff too. while
harold was wrestling with the window, i
did manage to finish painting the exterior
doors and trim - front and side. i painted
them black - bright shinny black - which is
the lastest trend in vancouver. but no one
has a black door up there. it looks real cool.

so, to answer your question, no i didn't
find any cool stuff washed ashore BUT we
did find a lot of really cool lumber at
a mill which had closed down.

piles and piles of cedar lumber has been sitting
outside of this mill. all the exposed pieces
had turned silver with the weather - i should
have taken a picture. anyway, it was being
sold really cheaply and some of it was given
away. we calculated how much we'd need for
a fence around the back yard and for a wood
shed and rummaged through the piles and got
what we needed. we got cedar shiplap siding
for the shed and planking for the floor and
12', 1x5 planks for a scucum cedar rail fence
and cedar fence posts and cedar trim to frame
the outside windows - all for under $200.
that was as much fun as beach combing. i'd
make a bet that when we're up next - probably
april - there will be no lumber left.

we should have gotten more.

oy.

we've got our work cut out for us :)

Sandman

Now I have to really hope the Giants somehow stop the Rams this weekend.

That's enough to make me a NY Giants fan (for the weekend).
