My parents were divorced, I had a brother with cerebral palsy (and two other brothers) who made it hard for my mother to work, and thus I am not particularly naive about being on the financial edge. Although we lived in our house for a few years after the divorce, we were subject to foreclosure eventually, and slept on my great- grandmother's floor for some months before finding a two bedroom apartment (for five people) that we could afford. We occasionally had emergencies, and relatives might help, or, in a pinch, the parish (this was during my Catholic years) would help discretely. Without belaboring matters, I have not led a particularly sheltered life.........
