You have to be on active duty to get an awol. I spent 8 years in the navy reserves, civil engineer corps. In the reserves if you don't show up, you don't prosecuted for not drilling. Instead you get marked with Us in the muster log for unsatifactory drill performance. A couple of those a year and they kick u out of the reserves, which is a voluntary force. After getting kicked out your are subject to the draft like everybody else.
