In the context of countering some charges from Democratic candidates that I find offensive, I think she is within the bounds of legitimate polemic. Of course the War on Poverty did not mean to increase illegitimacy. Of course there may have been other factors. Marvin Olasky is keen to emphasize how counter- cultural values which merely hurt middle class children devastated those without family resources to keep them out of jail or get them into rehab, for example. But the point is that the War on Poverty was almost certainly misconceived, and merely made matters worse, and yet Democrats were not eager to subject it to scrutiny. The degree of causality is a matter of controversy, but it is now fairly widely accepted that it hurt.........
