Eric, you are not taking a top-down viewpoint of this topic, .. a situation best described by the cliche "You can't see the forest for the trees."

Pretend you don't know so many details, that you're not personally acquainted with all those trees. Then answer the following:

(1) Yes or no, can a GSM handset built circa 2000 get voice service on a WCDMA RAN built today?

(2) Yes or no, can a WCDMA handset built today get voice service on a GSM RAN built circa 2000?

In each case, assume th CN is not an impediment to a "yes" answer.
