Sam, Our own Gottfried used to work in that field, Although lately his focus is elsewhere. But as I understand it, the yield in production is very sensitive to meticulous process monitoring and control. I am comfortable that WD can handle that part very well.

The part that they are untested in is new designs. That is a new venture for them, and I assume they have to recruit people from the top tier of the industry.

As an element of comfort, IBM and Fugitsu for several years were leapfrogging each other in announcements of areal density. As you know, collectively, their reward has been losing impressive amounts of money. And the occasional laggard, Seagate, has made equally impressive amounts of money. So apparently success depends on other factors. Like understanding the market, and controlling costs.

Did you notice that on Friday, a down day for the indices, and for MXO and STX, WDC was up on high volume ? I think institutions have decided their initial sell-off was unjustified, and they are getting back in. Using down days to get better price.
