Since we now have a real-time lab to test the thesis, time will tell who is right. I would say that we have a decided advantage over the Russians, as we are not trying to keep Iraq, but only stabilize it, and the great majority of Iraqis themselves have no love for al Qaeda, esp. the Shi'ites. So the Iraqis themselves will do the policing.

The Russians have their Chechnya; will Iraq become like Chechnya for the US?

The frightening part of this comparison is that Russia at one point, declared victory and gave up in Chechnya. That didn't stop the Chechen terrorists.
