Yep, I read that, Sam. Much of this stuff gets pushed, deeply, under the rug. One of the reasons Cole's blog is so helpful is that he pulls the rug back.

I served 6 years active duty and never for one moment considered serving in the reserves for exactly the reasons this article cites. Many people take reserve duty for some time away from home once and month, an annual 2 week adventure, some financial benefits and also a sense of duty balanced by the thought that the chances for a call up to active for an assignment like Iraq would be a very small probability. Now this type of assignment is a high probability.

In addition to being old in the field doing the job of a 22 year old, I suspect that many who cannot afford it will lose considerable income while deployed.

Its a shame we decimated the Army in the 90's. The government better get their act together and be prepared to staff Afghanistan and Iraq for many years to come. We will need a strong force in Iraq for many years.

With the decimation of the manufacturing sector, many young people will have little choice to join the military or the food service industry.

Even after we donate billions to get Iraq back on its feet, who is going to invest money in Iraq without a stable government established? I think we will be there for as long as it takes, like Korea.

Countries who want future contracts with the Iraqi government should be stepping up with good will money and forces now and stop whining about HAL. Who wants out tax dollars being revenues for the French government?
