Let me tell you the continuing saga of the tire.

The Catalina Highway is a wonderfully scenic road up the mountain, all narrow and curvy with steep drops. And an utter lack of guardrails for quite a stretch where they're repairing the road. I didn't mention the fact that a flat tire could easily have killed us and I was lucky to get the car stopped on a reasonably wide pullout.

With regard to your question, yes and yes. Yes somebody stopped as I was changing the tire and yes he helped me, which was a good thing because the lug nuts were too hot to handle without his leather gloves. A bicyclist, he was. Lots of masochistic bicyclists on that road.

So, I decided to let the car rental company off the hook for nearly killing me. I was even feeling so full of love for my fellow man as to call them today to let them know there wasn't a usable spare in the car just in case they had planned to rent it out to someone tomorrow right after I returned it. And they had the audacity to tell me that I had to pay for the tire since I declined their insurance!!!!

According to the fellow I spoke to, I'm responsible for mechanical failures as well as damage actually inflicted by me. Brand new car. With presumably a brand new tire. Blows out in a potentially dire situation and those $@#&^$s have the audacity...
