China exports refined zinc but they don't have enough mine capacity so they import zinc cons. However their exports are rapidly declining. In May they exported 10,000 tonnes , well below the 33,700 monthly average of a year ago. In the first 5 months this year , net exports were 90,000 tonnes, which is more than a half of the exports to the western World in the same period a year earlier. If current low export volumes are maintained then the Western market could move into a meaningful deficit this year.
the above is from comments by Kevin Norrish of Barclay's Capital as printed in the Northern Miner of August 4 - 10, 2003. Hence you buy zinc miners Breakwater BWR, Teck TEK.B and Inmet IMN.
