There's no need to scoff at the vernacular style of C.M. Coolidge's paintings. He has many admirers:

Just because no one has ever committed "Guernica" to black velvet does not mean that it is a higher work of art than the homely scene of "A Friend in Need". And certainly more Americans would be familiar with the work of Coolidge than Picasso.
