The call for this week: We remain convinced that the driver of the recent improving economic numbers has been the refinance afterburner and the July tax cut. With weekly home-loan applications down some 80% from their May peak, we have trouble seeing much more “kick” from refis. Likewise, we think most of the tax rebate checks have been spent, leaving us in “muddle, muddle, toil and trouble” mode. A 5% pullback from last week's actual high of 9609 (DJIA), or the theoretical high of 9661, targets the 9129 to 9178 area. Stay tuned!
