Strong Explosion Hits Kabul As Rumsfeld Arrives

Additional reporting by Husbanullah, IOL Kabul Correspondent

KABUL, September 8 (IslamOnline.net & News Agencies) - Four Afghani policemen were killed and six were injured, Sunday September 7, in a bomb explosion that hit a police station in downtown Kabul and coincided with the U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld short visit to the Afghani capital, Kabul.

A bomb exploded Sunday evening in a police headquarters at Wazir Akbar Khan in downtown Kabul, killing four policemen and injuring two, according to Afghani news sources.

The sources pointed that the severe explosion has led to the destruction of the police station and several glass windows of adjacent houses.

The Canadian forces working with Internal Stability and Assistance Forces (ISAF) have besieged the area and started searching for perpetrators of the attack, according to the same sources.

Meanwhile, Rumsfeld has arrived in Afghanistan Sunday noon on a short visit, during which he discussed with the Afghani President Hamid Karzai the increase of U.S. assistance to Afghanistan.

In another development, Dawlat Khan, a security official in Bactica province, declared that a number of Taliban fighters had fired three missiles against a U.S. forces headquarters in Zerok town, Bactica, pointing out that two hit the headquarters, while the third missed it. The attack resulted in no damages.

U.S.-supported Afghani government forces fought with a number of Taliban fighters in the region, leading to the death of three Taliban fighters.

Afghani Shahadat newspaper reported in its issue of Monday, September 8, that unknown people launched five missiles Sunday against Gardez town, destroying a house without inflicting any casualties.

Five Government Soldiers Killed

“Five Afghani government soldiers have been killed Saturday September 6 in an ambush prepared by Taliban fighters for a governmental patrol in Shahwali Cot, South of Afghanistan,” Agence France Presse (AFP) quoted the deputy military commander of Kandahar province General Seif Allah as saying.

Afghani news sources pointed out that the U.S.-Afghani operations against Al-Qaeda and Taliban fighters are still underway in the southeast region of Afghanistan, particularly in Bactica, as U.S. forces found Sunday September 7 three weaponry warehouses and bombarded them.

“The weapons found belonged to Moloy Galal El-Din Safany, a prominent Taliban leader,” said a government official in Bactica province.

In another development, Afghani government sources declared that three Taliban leaders have been arrested after being injured in battles with the government forces in Arbil.

Taliban movement has called upon ex-field leaders and scholars in Bactia and Bactica provinces to declare Jihad against U.S. forces and oust foreign forces from Afghanistan.

Since August 25th, around 1000 Afghani soldiers, supported by hundreds of U.S. soldiers and aircraft, have bombarded Taliban positions in Daishuban mountains in Zabul province, northeast of Kandahar.
