Target the roots of terror while going after terrorists. Terror is real. Terror is global. And terror needs to be a priority. But it will not be accomplished by invading countries. Go after terrorists? Absolutely, and make it known that friendships will not survive terrorism or those who support terrorism -- and that is exactly how Bush started out. In the immediate aftermath of 9/11, Bush successfully defused the war of civilizations approach. Now, he is completely consumed by it.

1) The first step is to "renounce" the Bush Doctrine. If Bush can't say the words, then show it in action.
2) Show that we have pulled back from the Bush Doctrine by having the political future of Iraq determined via the UN. This is a no-brainer. Maintain unitary military control if you like, but hand over political control to the UN. Get our troops out of Iraq as quickly as possible. Put money into rebuilding Iraq, not into an army of occupation.
3) Focus on terrorists and only on terrorists. Make terrorism visible. Show the Saudis for what they are -- and there are many others. This will be much harder to do now because we have precious little credibility -- but it must be done.
4) Tackle North Korea -- this is the most significant country making a direct threat against the US -- talk, but prepare for war. We might not want war, but we might get it anyway. North Korea is capable of going on the offensive. Any talks must be more precisely focused. A six ring circus will not work. Bilateral talks, mediated by China, are the best shot. Sign an non-agression pact -- it was plain stupid to threaten North Korea in the first place, not because there is anything redeeming about North Korea, but because it was counterproductive. Attack or lower the threat level and cut a deal, but stop the bullshit and fire Bolton -- I believe that being an asshole would stand up in court as grounds for dismissal.
