Mr Mark and Mr Cow - again I want to add thanks as many have for your efforts, particularly to those of us who used to be totally computer illiterate.

Question for this post involves AOL - (Before I get spammed, I know I should hang my head in shame for using it but I am getting weaned off it and only really use it now for email and some news. )

I run it on my cable connection and have had some problems each time they come up with an upgrade. After doing all the things AOL recommends, like cache cleaning, reinstalling, deleting global files and installers, I still have a problem with the AOL program freezing up or just not responding after a while.

The one suggestion they told me to do which I have not done is to LOWER THE HARDWARE ACCELERATION in the Display (Win XP Pro - control panel display settings advanced troubleshoot).

I figure that AOL gives you recommendations that are generic and may interfere with other programs which they may not be all that concerned about.

So - my long winded question is there a negative to lowering the hardware acceleration? I'm not a gamer and my system is a high end laptop toshiba 1600x 1200 display.

One more question - I know 3 issues for the same poster - thanks in advance.

Win XP Pro - Do you recommend that the Registry be cleaned and, if so, with which program. I'm not having any problems but remember under older Windows programs, it was often recommended that utilities be run to eliminate keys and strings that were no longer needed.

mr.mark, Dell laptop HD replaced: I was out all day and just wanted to report that WinXP Home re-installation [clean install] went without a hitch. The replacement drive is really 20GB rather than the 10GB that failed. I'll take a couple of days slowly reinstalling my own programs before I go online with that machine. ZA and NAV first, then activate internet access and install Windows updates.
