Andy,

Re: well it's definitely believable... but the 'bridge reconstruction' numbers are so whacked out as to make the story somewhat amazing...

We may be considering a minor patch job by the Iraqi engineers compared to a complete replacement by Bechtel.

I've worked public contracts before, and when it comes to cost plus a fee contracts, which is the way Bechtel is operating, the most costly solution is the logical solution from a business point of view. Their profit is based on the gross volume of work they do.

So if the bridge simply needs patching, but Bechtel can sell a complete replacement to a compliant CPA contracts officer, and Bush can sell an $87 Billion supplemental appropriation to an obedient Congress, you can be well assured that the U.S. taxpayer will pay $50,000,000 so Bechtel can make its markup on the deal. And then turn around and bribe Bush for the next round of ripping off you and me.

It's beginning to look like Bush/Cheney and their cronies are writing an incredible new chapter in the history of government fraud, waste and abuse. While sanctimoniously denying money to other aspects of the government designed to aid the middle and working classes.

Re: they think the rest of us are utter fools...

If you read the transcript of Bush's latest 'Address to the Nation', it is painfully obvious that his loyal audience are the utter fools of this nation. Because of corporate control of the media, the majority of Americans can now be labeled utter fools by those of us who actually read, and actually pay attention to news, policy and analysis.

It's astonishing to think that late night TV, i.e. Leno and Letterman, is a significant news source for a large number of young people. Scary, if one hopes to continue with the great notion of living in a democracy.
