Phil, it's now my view that the US will have to seriously reconsider all the BS, neocon fantasies about rewriting the history of the world in the image of the United States. In fact, when removed from their "anti-terrorist" cum "bringing democracy" wrapping, these fantasies resolve as a simple agenda --- 1. grabbing oil and 2. getting rid of Israel's enemies. However, what we have now witnessed in Iraq, and to a lesser extent in Afghanistan, is that there are costs to implementing these fantasies which were never considered by the academics who were responsible for formulating the plan or the power-crazed politicians who implemented it. So much so, the continuation of this "war against terrorism" (which is another term used to describe these PNAC fantasies) will be characterised by massively increasing costs and diminishing returns. It is thus my opinion that, unless the US has a death wish for itself, it will have to seriously rethink this whole policy of making wars in the Mid East, ostensibly against anyone the US doesn't like, but actually to grab oil and make Israel happy. For this reason, I believe that attacks on Syria, Lebanon, Iran, Saudi etc will have to be put on the back burner until the ballsups in Iraq and Afghanistan have been resolved, which could take another generation or even longer. Apropos Colon Powell, I saw "through" him quite some time ago as just a guy doing a job for his boss. In fact, when he came to SA to attend the Conference on Sustainable Development, the local Africans, who have quite an amusing turn of phrase (sometimes), referred to him as a "house nigger". Of course, no white dare utter a phrase like that for fear of being branded a racist and Heaven knows what else.
