1. Because if it were not there, there would be a hole in the landmass of the middle east, it would be filled by seawater, and the ocean levels would drop.
2. Because if Saudi Arabia did not exist with their Wahabbi Islam, there would be less strife in the world, less terrorism which would lower the ratings of CNN & other news stations which need to report these things. Life would be boring without being paranoid about armageddon.

Judge calls Bali bomber a coward

BALINESE Judge Ifa Sudewi and her four fellow judges today will reach out to try to "touch the heart" of the man many believe has no heart.

Judge Sudewi says Abdul Aziz, aka Imam Samudra, the defiant Bali bombing field commander, is a "coward" who has not felt a scrap of remorse for his role in taking the lives of 202 innocent people, including 89 Australians.

But despite this, Judge Sudewi wants Aziz to listen to the judges recite to him verses from his own Muslim holy book, the Al Koran, and from Pope John Paul – verses which preach about the crime of killing other people.

Judging from his behaviour late yesterday, on the eve of being sentenced to death by firing squad, the prophetic verses of peace are unlikely to have any effect on the 33-year-old terrorist.

Unrepentant and angry to the end, Aziz told a crowd of reporters at Denpasar's Polda police headquarters late yesterday, as he was being taken to see detectives: "Australia go to hell, the Jews and missionaries in the world go to hell. Islam will win, Islam will win."

His eyes showed little of the fear he must no doubt be feeling deep down as he repeatedly chanted his favourite mantra of "Allahu Akbar" – God is great. And he declared he was not afraid of death.

Today, in a damning 333-page judgment, the five-judge bench of the Denpasar District Court will find that Aziz commanded a troop of willing men to plan and execute a terrorist attack in Bali. In sentencing him to death, they will point out that Aziz has never felt sorry for his crimes and for the suffering he has wrought on so many people.

Yesterday, in an interview with The Courier-Mail, Judge Sudewi, who has watched Aziz for months in court, said she believed he was nothing but a "coward" who never got his own hands dirty, but ordered everyone else around, including two suicide bombers who sacrificed their lives at his urging.

Judge Sudewi said she and her fellow judges had chosen poignant verses from the al Koran and from a letter which Catholic Pope John Paul had written to his followers.

The Catholic verse tells people to fear God if they commit crimes and that they are accountable to God for their actions.

"The Government is the servant of God. If you commit crimes, be afraid of Him," the letter says.

The judges also have chosen several verses from the al Koran to demonstrate to Aziz his claims that his actions are sanctioned by Allah and by his religion to revenge the treatment of Muslims worldwide are a warped interpretation of Islam.

One of the verses says: "Don't you take life which is forbidden by Allah . . . and for those who are killed cruelly, so actually we have given power to their heirs."

Judge Sudewi says that this verse is aimed at pointing out to Aziz that the judges now have the authority to punish him for his actions – ironically with the same fate he bestowed upon his victims.
