Only a small % of the white population, even in the South, were ever active members of the KKK. Only a small group of people did lynchings. But the KKK and lynchings happened, regularly, for a hundred years, because of their passive acceptance by the majority of the white population. We had constitutional amendments which made blacks equal, and gave them the vote, but there was a collective decision by the white majority, from the 1870s till the 1950s, to ignore that part of the Constitution.
