>> If the 3.5 in. market is suddenly profitable, what is to keep Japan from coveting their piece of it?

The couple billions of $$ that Hitachi, Fugitsu, MKE, NEC and others lost in 6 years of trying to establish share in the disk drive market. The disk drive market is suddenly profitable now because companies that do drives as a hobby decided to stop bleeding and move on to something else where they have not been out-competed.

The only reason the Japanese companies dominate mobile drives is that the customers are captive divisions.
