Campaign finance law is a "cure" for an ailment that didn't exist when the Constitution was first enacted.

The country is too large, and too diverse, for Presidents to be in the pocket of any one (or any one group) of contributors, while the House of Representatives is too populous for one bribed Congressman to make much of a difference.

The biggest danger is from Senators, and when the Constitution was enacted, State legislators selected their federal Senators. Very hard for significant corruption in those circumstances, at least compared to campaign finance contributions.

Maybe we should think about repealing the 17 Amendment.
