Neocon, I agree that no lie has yet been "proven." After all, if you say something that later turns out to be untrue, that is NOT "proof" that you lied. A "lie" requires that you knew that the statement was false at the time it was made.

Although not yet proven, an inference can be drawn that "lying" probably occurred. The statements with respect to the imminency of the dangers and the extent of the wmds were so strongly stated and so unambiguously made as to indicate certainty. The information now trickling out from the intelligence sources reveals that at least some of the statements were badly off the mark and, in addition, reveals that the level of certainty with which the statements were made did not reflect the internal debate and disagreements among the intelligence agencies and experts. One can't say he "knows" something when the truth is that he doesn't "know" it but simply suspects it. The lie may be in the representation of certainty.

What a bad box to be in. The best defense of the Bush people is that either our intelligence services were stupidly wrong, or that we were so inept that we believed the Pentagon basement group when we should have paid heed to the cautions of our professional analysts in the CIA and the defense dept. Deliberately misrepresented or blindly foolish, take your pick.
