The vast majority of pilots are sane rational people. And if there not then they don't need a pistol in order to quickly kill people as your examples point out. Not all policemen are sane rational people either, should we keep guns out of the hands of the cops?

I'm with LP on this one. I seriously doubt that if a pilot was hell bent on killing the scores of souls behind him that shooting individual passengers would be his preferred method of execution. Allowing all pilots to carry guns makes sense to me. El Al pilots are required to carry handguns while flying, and when was the last time you've heard of an incident aboard one of their planes?
I fear an armed intruder more, and place little faith in the current airport security. A flight attendant friend was in the security line recently, with an air marshal in front of her. The security officer wouldn't allow the air marshal to carry his nail clippers on board. Never mind the .45 strapped to his chest.
