I think its not moot even if a well regulated militia for the defense of the country was the only rational. The amendment is not about the rights of the militia, its about "the right of the people". The militia is the only stated reason for recognizing the right, it may not be the only reason for recognizing the right, but even if it the only such reason, a change in that reason doesn't change the legal right. The constitutional right remains until and unless it is amended away.
