A privately owned business is not public in my opinion. It is the property of its owner.

But once he opens a business and starts taking paying customers and enters the public marketplace, he has to live by the rules of the marketplace.

That isn't the rule of the marketplace but a legal rule. If it was the rule of the market place it would be that people would refuse to do business with such an open bigot so he would have to run his business in a less bigoted way. If that happened I would not be opposed to it.

Or do you think all the grocery stores in your neighborhood should be allowed to refuse to sell to you because they don't like people named Tim?

Yes they should be allowed to do so.
