<<Why should we design our health care payment system simply to be easy to administrate?>>

Uh, so it works? And costs less? And stops bleeding all of the insured population dry?

Look I KNEW I was gonna get opposition from the more libertarian minded threadsters. There was a time that I shared that view, but after working within the system for two decades, it's pretty damn clear things aren't getting better. Until the employer-financed system is replaced, it ain't gonna get better. The whole point of that system is to remove the pricing signals that would begin to restore balance to the markets. (And at current prices, I'm not at all sure consumers WANT to be more "informed" about what health care really costs...got autologous stem cell infusions? Or a year's worth of gleevec?)

Free markets have their place in most areas of the economy. Unfortunately, I believe health care is the exception.
